About our school

Autism East Midlands is opening a new independent school within the village of Braithwell, Doncaster.

We're an independent special school for autistic students aged between 5 and 19 years, situated within commutable distance of Doncaster, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Autism East Midlands has provided specialist education for autistic children and young people since 1968 and the first Sutherland House School was established in 1970.

With such a rich history of providing specialist support and education to autistic students, we're delighted to bring our second school to Doncaster within the village of Braithwell.

Frequently asked questions

Are you hiring? If so, how can I apply?

We are hosting a recruitment day at SHS Braithwell on 17 September from 3pm to 7pm. We invite anyone who is interested in joining us as we begin our journey to come along and speak to Gill, our Headteacher, about vacancies available at the site.

How do I apply after this?
Open vacancies will be listed on the Autism East Midlands website after our recruitment event.

When will the school be open?

We're continuing to get the school ready, and so are unable to share a specific opening date. When we do have a date, we will publish here and on our social media.

Can I come tour the school?

If you are a parent/carer and want to see if the school is a right fit for your child, please get in touch with us at braithwelladmin@aem.org.uk to organise a tour with our Headteacher.

How can I refer my child?

Admissions are submitted via local authority referrals. If you're interested in having your child or young person join us, you will need to submit this request to your local council as long as your child has a diagnosis of autism and an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).
